Street foods and pizza are Neapolitan hallmarks. But at Veritas Restaurant in Naples, the menu is quite an upgrade from the city's every day fare. Open from October through May, Veritas locals come here on 'special occasions', even as the atmosphere is light and casual. Food and presentation are fancy. This is a white table clothes place and it aims to be so. Everything I ate here from appetizers to dessert was pretty extraordinary and affordable. The chefs, unlike many in Napoli, are incredibly creative, turning out plates of baccalà tartare and baby octopus with Ventotene lentils, or spaghetti with lupins, shrimp and a local green, friarielli. I have never seen Pigeon with wild mushrooms and berries on a menu in this city before, and it was such a delicious surprise to know someone is cooking what in this city seems like uncharted waters. The negroni we ordered were large and strong, and their wine list, though mostly focused on regional Italian reds and whites, also included French wines and Belgium beers. For desert, creamy dark chocolate mousse with amaretto biscuits and cherries. Will definitely be returning soon.
