Elvis may have left the building but you’ll find his likeness painted on black velvet at the Velveteria—Epicenter of Art Fighting Cultural Deprivation, located in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. This is the only museum in the world dedicated to the art of velvet painting and what better place to display these luminous works of art than Tinseltown?
Themed exhibit sections are punctuated by co-founders Carl Baldwin’s and Caren Anderson’s handwritten commentaries. In addition to various velvet Elvi, you’ll find tiki themes, the always popular Last Supper, a bedazzled Liberace, psychedelic blacklight works, a room full of not so tasteful nudes, and more.
Hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 6pm, or by appointment by calling 503-309-9299. Admission is $10 per person.
