We stopped by Vathi Beach on one of our kayak trips out of Matala for the day. We packed our lunches and grabbed some Greek Coffee from Nikos when we arrived. Not only did we have a beautiful view for lunch but we also had some great entertainment when Nikos began playing his lyra. It was an amazing local experience that you could never forget.

Learning to Play the Lyra at Vathi Beach

Vathi Beach, an isolated beach off the coast of Crete offers an intimate view of rural life. We paddle here by kayak, surrounded by azure water and high cliffs. We pack a light lunch in our boats and enjoy a cup of Greek coffee at a very small taverna, owned by an age old friend of The Northwest Passage. Nikos plays the lyra quite well, as opposed to me who plays it not so well (to say the least)!
