Casa Higueras was the first true boutique hotel to arrive in culturally captivating Valparaiso, renovating a 1930s mansion into a posh boutique hotel.
Perched atop Cerro Alegre with 20 spacious rooms (many with ocean-view terraces) the decor is nostalgic chic, honoring the handsome "bones" of the house. The service is top-notch, with lots of pampering and details. Built into the side of the hill, the five-level terraced garden cascades to an infinity pool with sweeping views of the port and ocean, and there's a spacious hot tub.
Step out to explore a maze of cobbled streets lined with homes painted a rainbow of vivid colors, visit the Fine Arts museum just down the street, or ride the century-old El Peral ascensor (funicular) down to the harbor. Everything is in walking distance here.
Be sure to dine in their Montealegre restaurant with arguably the best terrace, and view, in Valparaiso and innovative menu marrying local Chilean ingredients with refined technique and a superb wine list. At night, the surrounding hills appear to twinkle.
