In the Atacama Desert -- the driest place on Earth -- without humidity in the air, distances can be deceiving. People get disoriented and there are stories of people taking off for shade at a distant tree and then walk a few hundred yards and realize it is just a shrub. The Valley of the Moon is like that, too. Like this enormous sand dune, which looks like an average size, but is really about 1,500 tall. There are crazy site gags like this all over the Atacama. Pictures you find just can't capture the magnificence, you have to go there to experience it yourself. More pics attached.
