Originally we were trying to fly to Sicily from London, but it proved to be more expensive than expected. So we decided to instead fly to Malta and then take a Ferry to Palermo. All together (flight + ferry) was significantly cheaper than flying straight to Palermo and was it rewarding?? YES!
We loved Malta. Maltese people are so welcoming. The country is charming, and with all sorts of amazing hidden treasures.
Mdina, the old capital is a magical medieval town located on a hill in the middle of the island. Valletta, the capital city, is part of the long UN World Heritage sites, and well deserved. The views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens of the Harbour are outstanding. Spinola Bay was gorgeous and offered all sorts of cafes and restaurants with amazing Maltese food as well as other international food.
