The USS Bowfin earned the nickname "The Pearl Harbor Avenger" when it started service one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Now docked in the harbor as a museum, visitors can walk through the attack submarine and imagine what events transpired under the sea.
While the nearby USS Arizona Memorial is a quiet and somber remembrance of the December 7 attacks, the Bowfin illustrates history in a fascinating and family-friendly way with more than 4000 submarine artifacts on display.

Arizona Memorial and USS Bowfin
Many people go to the USS Arizona memorial, watch the film, and then take the shuttle out to the sunken ship, but plan to spend a bit more time at this park. The museums here are excellent, the grounds are beautiful, and pay the extra admission fee for the USS Bowfin (submarine) Tour and the submarine exhibit.
Know that there's a bag check at this facility. You can't bring your purse/bag/diaper bags, etc in here, but the check process is very efficient and well-staffed. Put your cash in your pocket--there's water and pop machines, as well as a hot dog cart if you plan on spending a long time and need something to eat.
I wish we'd spent the extra time to see the other ships on exhibit on the other side of the harbor. Next time perhaps?
It's easy to get here via public transportation. Just get on the main Waikiki route and stay on it--but be warned, it gets crowded.
