Next time you are visiting Tanga keep driving (or busing) and cross the Pangani river by ferry to head over to Ushongo Beach.
You will be greeted with empty beaches that are tide dependent and very interestingly a trade that is empowering the local women to help get them out of poverty - seaweed harvesting.
We spoke with some of the Mama's who were hard at work with their pant legs rolled up and kanga's reefed up. They told us that much of the seaweed is exported to Japan and other parts of Asia.
Walk carefully near the seaweed crops and you will find the water canals alive with sea life - from star fish to crabs and sea cucumbers.
