Almost everyone who travels Central America comments on the state of the street dogs here. It's a heartbreaking problem that is exascerbated by the the lack of organization and education throughout the country. Luckily Georgi McColl and a group of dedicated staff have taken matters into their own hands and created the Urban Dog Sanctuary, a place where sick and maltreated dogs can find medical care and love. The UDS is responsible for finding loving homes for hundreds of dogs every year and offer short and long-term volunteer opportunities for foreign travellers. Every time I visit, I end up with a new dog, so buyer beware!
