Most travelers come into Alleppey to rent a houseboat and spend the night in the backwaters of Kerala. That's a great experience, but Allepey is a small south Indian town that is friendly to tourists. One can "get local" with a stop at Uduppi's for breakfast. Mr. Uduppi (pictured) services idly, wada, and dosas on a banana leaf plate with a savory and spicy sambar broth on the side.
There are no utensils, so pour the broth over the starch and dig in (or rather watch how others do it, then dig in) When you're done, just head to the sink, wash your hands, and toss the banana plate in the composting pile.
As a note: Uduppi's is just one of several things to do in Alleppey besides the backwaters. Check out my blog post for more.
