When you've reached the surreal region of Cappadocia in Turkey, you'll soon realize that castles are carved from stone, ancient cities are hidden deep underground and that caves, surprisingly, make for haute hotels.
One of the easiest ways to experience the area's fairy tale formations is to take the easy trek to the top of Uchisar Castle. The trail wends through the natural rock, offering arresting views at every turn.
If you're lucky, you'll be the only visitor at the summit, the king of your own castle--for a few minutes, anyway. Gape at Mt. Erciyes in the distance, spot hot air balloons floating upward and marvel at the Pigeon valley below.
And why not--pretend that you pitched the Turkish flag flapping violently in the wind for few minutes before retracing your steps for an equally spectacular descent.
