East Texas Trail
Evergreens and hardwood trees form a rooftop that shades this East Texas park, which lies close enough to the DFW Metroplex to bring out the city folk on the weekends. Cool on hot summer days, the hilly trail can nevertheless be exhausting, so carry ample water. It's also aerobically taxing, with a twisty, 11-mile track featuring some exposed roots and sand pits. Extreme expertise is not required. Park rangers will supply maps, the trail is well marked. At the end of your ride, the lake awaits.
