You have a good chance of seeing a sea turtle while snorkeling or diving on the Great Barrier Reef, but you have a 100% chance of spotting one if you stop by the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Center on Fitzroy Island.
At the facility, sick and injured turtles are brought in from the Great Barrier Reef and Cape York Peninsula, and stay anywhere from 6 to 24 months before being released. The volunteers here are so passionate about their work, and you can see how they've bonded with each turtle. Each day the turtles are fed mixed greens, their tanks are cleaned and they take any necessary medications. Since the inception of the program, the rate of successful rehabilitation for turtles has gone from 30% to 85%. If you like turtles, this is a must see!
