The city of Trois-Rivières, Canada’s second-oldest French town, sits on a narrow stretch of river between Montréal and Québec. Its center was founded in 1634, and for centuries traders descended upon the historic wharves, which today welcome cruise ships. Just upstream, the Archipelago of Lake Saint-Pierre, which is essentially a 20-mile-long delta with more than 100 islands, is a UNESCO biosphere reserve where herons and other migrating waterbirds take advantage of seasonal floods.
