Everything comes in threes. In the case of Tres Gatos, it's a tapas bar, a bookstore and a vinyl record shop. The front half of the house is a lively Spanish spot with a focus on small plates. Past the chaotic kitchen is a space filled with bins of vintage vinyl topped with shelves of books. The collection of records is actually impressive. Everything from Etta James to Jackson Browne. Books are a bit sparse by comparison. The plates that pop on the menu include the traditional tortilla, mussels in a wine broth, the butterfish served and eaten whole, and the steak done to perfection. There is a compact wine selection along with some nice local beers which pleasantly pair with the food. The bar is packed and a bit cramped, adding to the energy. Staff maintain order and orders as the small kitchen sometimes struggles to get things going. They do deliver and the dishes range from casual to complex. Tres Gatos is one Jamaica Plain address worth having in your Boston rolodex.
