Ghostly Siberian Rails
In 2009, I traveled solo through Siberia and took the might Trans-Siberian from Vladivostok to Irktusk-- the rails were an eerie reminder of the thousands and thousands of exiled prisoners that took the same route into the Siberian steppe in the 19th and 20th century and suffered in the GUlags. In fact, we sped past prison compounds still operating--a reminder that the past is not so far gone.
