Tra Que Water Wheel
An amazing experience that I wouldn’t change for the world! My wife and I visited Vietnam with a tour company called Encounters Travel, and while I was a little bit dubious at first (I normally like to plan my own trips), it was actually a lot of fun.
Tra Que was the highlight of the entire trip (and there were lots of really great things). It is a gorgeous village on the outskirts of Hoi An. We cycled to an herb and vegetable farm where our guide told us about the history of the village and how they farm the vegetables and use them in medicine. We helped the farmers fertilise the land with seaweed (full of nutrients!) and raking and watering the plants and picking the greens.
We also got to cook Vietnamese dishes with the herbs and vegetables that we picked. I’m not the best cook, but I had a go and I think it tasted pretty good even if I do say so myself! It was relaxed and fun, and in such a beautiful setting that I can’t help but recommend it to everyone I can.
There were also rice paper making lessons, but we didn’t get a chance to do that – so when we go back that’s what we’re doing!
