The British Virgin Islands consists of 60 islands, just to the east of the US Virgin Islands. Most of the islands’ residents (23,000 out of some 28,000) live on Tortola, also home to the British Virgin Islands Regatta which begins at the end of March. Year-round the island is ideal for hiking and bicycling with views of nearby islands and average temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s. Of course there’s also no shortage of water activities—sailing, kayaking, and kiteboarding. Divers will want to don their masks at Rhone National Marine Park, off Salt Island, where you can explore the wreck of a Royal Mail Steamer which went down in a hurricane in 1867.
