I visited a wine shop in the town of Torres Vedras, Portugal called Garrefeira (Portugese for “bottle shop”) São Pedro (Portugese for “St. Peter”). José took over management of the establishment in 1997, and he’s assisted by his wife Sofia and son Martin. Everything about this place speaks Old World. There’s a magnificent wine press standing in the center of the room, and a very old wheel pump in the back that was once used to transfer wine from barrels into smaller containers. José even showed me a 1910 vintage bottle of port! He said it is absolutely priceless. If you’re ever in Torres Vedras, this is a stop you have to make.
