Tong Tong—Updating the Traditional Chinese Cheongsam
The Tong Tong shop is a darling little corner in the aging Shaw Towers complex. You can't help but notice this mysterious-looking tunnel that directs you to places unknown!
The tunnel leads you into a cute little shop that sells a range of ready-to-wear cheongsams and other Chinese-inspired apparel. What makes this shop stand apart from other traditional tailors is its use of modern fabric and contemporary cuts and shapes to create the dresses, making them one step beyond your typical wedding-dinner garb or Chinese New Year dresses.
Service is also excellent here; regulars are greeted like old friends, and the salesgirls can be helpful with suggestions, providing honest opinions and ever-ready assistance with the teeny buttons.
The dresses are not cheap, though, with blouses starting from $150 and dresses $300–$500, but you can see why when you examine the unique materials used. They are very well made and in rather limited quantity too. I'm probably going to be able to afford one of their dresses only for a very special occasion. But for those ladies willing to invest in a good and unique dress that harkens backs to Chinese culture without looking too Oriental, Tong Tong is a great place to check out!
