If you are planning a trip to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, you must include a visit to perhaps the most spectacular market in all of Central Asia. The famous Tolkuchka Bazaar is a sprawling complex of shopping halls in the desert suburbs of the capital. Here you can find everything you would ever need: rice, jewelry, clothing, carpets, car parts, and so much more. There is even a camel market!
The bazaar is not just a fabulous shopping opportunity. It is also a wonderland for photographers, as the colorful products of Turkmenistan are on full display. I found the fabrics and local clothing items to be especially captivating. People-watching was a highlight of the experience, too. The women of Ashgabat dress in style, and wear wonderful embroidered clothing.
The bazaar is located about eight kilometers from Ashgabat, just north of the airport. It is an inexpensive taxi ride from anywhere in the city. If you go, wear comfortable walking shoes because this massive shopping complex spreads out over acres. You can easily spend hours here exploring.
