Hidden gem near the Mexican border
The Tijuana Estuary is a small intertidal coastal estuary on the international border between California and Mexico. This place is a fantastic place for bird watching. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded in this wetland habitat. This is an important stop over for birds on the Pacific Flyway, which is a major north-south route of travel for migratory birds It doesn't look like much at first glance since the trail meanders near a neighborhood and you will follow along until you are further away from houses and in the marshland. There are about 4 miles of trails that stay relatively dry and higher up than the surrounding marsh. The nature center is also worth checking out.
