Expats came up with the nickname “Tons of Fun” as much for the similar sounding phrase as because you can get happily lost within Tianzifang’s lanes. It’s a historically preserved enclave within the French Concession, where many of the low-slung residential buildings now house bars, shops, and art galleries. Each alleyway has a distinct feel; dozens of paper umbrellas create a canopy above one lane, while another has jaunty red lanterns. As you wander, keep an eye out for the eclectic shophouse restaurants hidden up staircases.
