The collection of antiquities at the ultramodern Tianjin Museum consists of 200,000 pieces, including paintings, bronzes, ceramics and ancient coins; the most interesting exhibits focus on the history of the city. On Mondays, when the museum is closed, visit Grand Mercy Monastery, Tianjin’s oldest and largest Buddhist temple. The western building dates back to 1669 while the eastern building was finished in 1940. The Jingyuan Garden was a residence of Puyi, the last emperor of China, after he was forced to abdicate and leave the Forbidden City.
