Thursday Island

Thursday Island may be one of the smaller Torres Strait Islands, but a deep, protected harbor made it the most populous of the chain. Its 2,600 residents include the original Aboriginal and Melanesian cultures along with a multicultural mix of immigrants who came from Asia and the Pacific to work in the once-booming pearl-shell industry. The maze of reefs around the Torres Strait Islands has sunk a number of ships, including the RMS Quetta in 1890, for which Thursday Island’s historic All Souls and St. Bartholomew Church was built as a memorial.
