My favorite sculpture is not in Rome or the Louvre or the Guggenheim. It's in a retention pond at the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia. I'm fortunate enough to live within walking distance of the Nolan Trail, a 5-mile wooded path hugging the shoreline of Lake Maury within the museum's 550 acre park.
The statue, Selene, is the work of Italian artist Maria Gamundi and result of efforts of the Public Art Foundation. I almost didn't notice her with my gaze focused on the magnificent James River and Lions Bridge, but Selene is worth a turn-of-head and now, she's the first thing I go to see.
