Everyone all over the world is crazy for gelato. Even NYC has succumbed to the craze and now artisinal gelatos can be found all over the city for close to $5 a serving. But long before gelato reached these shores, poor Italian immigrants were bringing a different kind of summer treat and making it a staple of New York summers, the slushy concoction known as an Italian Ice. And no one does them better than the Lemon Ice King of Corona, Queens. A small is less than $2 and for that you get a small paper cup with no spoon--the technique is to squeeze the sides of the cup and slurp up the slushy mixture. Pistachio, lemon, and mint chip are the classics. It's great on a summer night on the way to Flushing Meadows for a baseball or tennis match.
