Consistently named one of the most haunted sites in all of Texas, and star of many a paranormal TV specials and magazine features, The Grove is also the residence of paranormal investigator and writer Mitchel Whitington. Whitington purchased the antebellum home in 2002 and says, "The ghost stories here go back over one hundred years and through a number of owners." Among the sightings: "A lady in a white dress has been seen walking beside the east side of the house, stepping through a wall, and then walking through several rooms. A man in a black suit is sometimes seen walking among the flowers and plants of the garden; he is dressed in old-fashioned attire, and is wearing a top hat." There is also a mischievous spirit that inhabits the “new room” (so named because it was not added until 1870), who is known to play tricks on the owners and visitors. Whitington says that the paranormal happens so much at the Grove that it feels routine. And unlike many private haunted houses, the Grove is open for tours on the weekends (you have to call and book first).
