Donkey Sanctuary

Almost as famous as the island’s flamingos are its donkeys, onetime beasts of burden of the salt trade. To get up close and personal with the braying cuties, head to the Donkey Sanctuary—home to hundreds of them, several of whom will nudge their snack-seeking snouts inside your car windows as you do a driving tour. (Conveniently, carrots are for sale here.) Or take a walk through the "special care" meadow, where the sick, wounded and orphaned residents live.
