Outside San Jose, Costa Rica, you'll find the ARA Project; a non-profit zoological park dedicated to the conservation of the Great Green and Scarlet Macaws.
These beautiful birds are an endangered species. The ARA Project is a breeding and reintroduction program staffed strictly by volunteers. The park can be visited by reservation and all entrance fees go to the maintenance of the project. Volunteer opportunities are available. Information for volunteers is on their website. To date the project has released over 140 birds back into the wild.
Visiting the park is a true highlight of any trip to Costa Rica.
