Where Yangon goes to party
On the Ninth Floor of a large, nondescript entertainment complex in Yangon is one of the most popular clubs in the city. The place's true name still remains a mystery to me, but if you tell a taxi driver "the ninth floor," virtually anyone will know where you are talking about. You won't find any longyis or monhinga here. This is probably one of only a few places outside Bagan where you will here western music and see strobe lights. Even if you aren't into the typical club scene, it's fun to go see how average middle class Burmese college-age kids hang out on the weekend. There is a small (sometimes fluctuating) cover for foreigners, but you are sure to be the only one in the room. Every time I've been (five and counting) I haven't seen a single other foreign face. I've been told that some nights are LGBTQ nights, but haven't figured out when. You have to take the very old, very rickety elevator to get to the club.
Also - watch out for the hawkers in the parking lot late at night when you are looking for a cab home. They can be pushy. If you have a Yangon local to help you, it can be a lot nicer.
