I grew up in Newport, and I am still thoroughly enamored with the town after all these years. It manages to blend the most upscale sort of coastal extravagance—mansions, estates, and elaborate gardens—with a celebration of workaday nautical pastimes like fishing and boat building. The best way to explore the town is on foot, by wandering down the side streets off the main drag of Thames Street. You’ll find art galleries, charming seafood restaurants, a wonderful single-screen movie theater, piers with all manner of docked boats, and elegant Colonial architecture. Walking up Memorial Avenue will also bring you to the Cliff Walk, a spectacular bluff-top walking trail that winds between the Atlantic and some of the most famous backyards in town—like those of the Vanderbilt and Doris Duke estates.
