From May through September, Portugal's mid-Atlantic island of Terceira, in the Azores archipelago, hosts numerous "touradas a corda," or, "bullfighting on a rope" events. Unlike the controversial and cruel bullfights of Spain, the bulls on Terceira Island are unharmed at the end. Terceira's bulls have had their horns blunted for safety and have a thick rope around their neck, held at the other end by a team of five men dressed completely in white, from the tops of their traditional hats down to their street smart adidas. The anticipation of the bull's arrival is palpable as the crowd grows wild with excitement. The bull runs freely through the designated city streets and young men, one by one, courageously take their turn at getting as close to the hulking animal as they can.
