Learning the Fine Art of Haggling in Egypt
While some fine the constant presence of attention-seeking purveyors of trinkets in Egypt a little overwhelming at first, it’s best to go with the flow and fine-tune your haggling skills. First, never feel compelled to buy anything, but do know that the sharp decline in tourism recently has meant a loss of income for many people in Egypt. Spending even just a few dollars will help out these sellers tremendously. First, identify something you want to buy and mentally set a price limit. Casually ask about the item, not expressing too much interest and start the dance. This is about role playing, so be sure to show disdain at high prices and even pretend to walk away in order to lower the price. About half of the original asking price is where you should target your final purchase price.
