Teatro Amazonas

Manaus’s gorgeous Belle Epoque Teatro Amazonas, the famous opera house that opened with a performance by tenor Enrico Caruso in 1897, is the most visible reminder of the vast wealth generated by the rubber boom at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Opera productions resumed in the 1990s, but if your timing isn’t right to catch a performance, you can still tour the building. The opera’s gilded opulence, its ornate ceiling and all that marble and steel brought from Europe help explain why Manaus was once nicknamed “the Paris of the Jungle.”
