Tangier has a compact medina that inches up the hill from the old port in a series of whitewashed alleys. By Moroccan standards it's a relative youngster (its fortified kasbah only dates from the 15th century), but its size makes it easy to navigate. Make like a local and head for the small square of Petit Socco to take a break from souvenir shopping and watch the performance of the streets go by with a pot of mint tea.
