The island of Sumba in the Indonesian archipelago offers the traveler seeking an off the beaten track location everything he or she could ever want. There is culture, empty white sand beaches, monster surf and great snorkeling. There are only half a dozen resorts or lodges on this island, so you will only be sharing space with the locals. The islanders are not used to seeing western faces, so you will be the subject of curiosity wherever you go.
Newa Sumba Resort lies on the northwest side of Sumba and provides large bungalows for a very reasonable price. The beach in front of the resort is as beautiful a beach as I've seen anywhere and the snorkeling there is marvelous. You do need to bring your own equipment. The price at Newa includes amazing home style Indonesian classics, so you won't go hungry.
