Tambo Colorado

Part of what makes the ruins of Tambo Colorado so worthwhile is their sheer novelty. Though you'll find some of the familiar hallmarks of Inca stonework—the standardized niches, the raised ceremonial platform—they're completely out of context: This 15th-century complex sits not on a lush mountaintop but smack in the middle of the coastal desert, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of General San Martín. The ruins are beautiful, not least because the dry climate has preserved an impressive amount of the bright paint on the adobe walls.
