The Mammoth Lakes Basin proves to be just as spectacular in the winter as in the summer, though it’s covered in snow. To best explore the area, head up to the Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center.
More than 19 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails loop around the lakes and through the forest. You are likely to get good exercise and have a tranquil winter day in the sunshine among chirping birds. There are a variety of programs, including masters classes, full moon tours, and skiing with a naturalist guide.
