The adjectives "indescribable," "immeasurable," or "unbelievable" would be hard-pressed to adequately describe or give justice to my flight and glacier landing in Denali National Park, with Talkeetna Air Taxi. Known in Alaska as the "glacier landing company," with experience since 1947, Talkeetna Air Taxi takes you up on an astonishing flight through Denali National Park, giving you views of North America's largest peak and the glaciers below that you could never see otherwise. The flight circles Denali's 20,327 foot peak several times, so every person in the plane gets staggering views of the giant covered in white. Talkeetna is the base from which mountaineers climbing Denali depart from, so the views also include ant-sized tents of the courageous expeditioners. The jagged, snow-capped peaks look like the Swiss Alps, the sunlight reflecting its splendor on the splintered mountain tops, and the cracked and twisted ice glows with a bluish hue below. The plane begins its descent and the pilot cranks its skis down, as it approaches a runway blanketed in snow and glides peacefully on top of the Ruth Glacier. You have plenty of time to take in this indescribable resplendence, standing atop 200 feet of frozen ice, surrounded by towering craggy mountain peaks in the middle of Denali National Park, before boarding the return flight back to Talkeetna. This is a must-do experience for anyone going to Alaska.
