After the race in which only a fraction of the riders are serious competitors, trick riding dominates the festival. One such event involves many prayer flags being thrown out on the ground while riders gallop past and attempt to pick up as many as they can without falling off or stopping. Although there are many Horse Racing Festivals throughout Western China, the one in Tagong and also in Lithang are run by the locals for the locals and don't have a hint of tourist attraction to them. It is a rare opportunity to see the locals enjoying one of their traditions in the same way they have for generations.
