Svalbard Global Seed Vault
Guaranteeing the future of the human race is serious business on Svalbard. Buried deep within the permafrost is a storage facility for the world’s crops, established by Norway in 2008. Inside the vault, seeds of 4,000 varieties of food crops such as beans, wheat and rice are sealed and kept at a steady zero degrees Fahrenheit. Because the Global Seed Vault is rarely open to the public, this tour is an exciting opportunity to see one of the planet’s key disaster-recovery sites.
