This relaxing and affordable enclave of two-story, yellow-and-white, colonial-inspired buildings surrounds a large pool amid Bermuda grass lawns studded with tall palm trees and hammocks. Sunshine Suites is just across the street from Seven Mile Beach, where more luxurious and far more expensive resorts are clustered. Air-conditioned suites are a bit characterless, with wall-to-wall carpeting, basic furniture, and full kitchens, but, hey, the high-speed Internet is free, and most guests are way too busy to spend much time indoors. They’re here to dive, sunbathe, and sightsee. The hotel offers lockers and a rinse pool for scuba divers, and free beach chairs to carry across the road to one of the Caribbean’s most postcard-perfect beaches. A house cat, Paco, adds to the homey, friendly atmosphere.

It’s a 150-yard walk across West Bay Road to Seven Mile Beach; access is between the Westin and Ritz-Carlton resorts, a location that ensures the sands are swept clean daily. At the Ritz, Blue by Eric Ripert serves upscale seafood; bargain hunters prefer the Wednesday all-you-can-eat lobster buffet at Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort (389 West Bay Rd.). Outside of resort world, but still within walking distance, Whiskey Mist (Unit 19, the Strand, Seven Mile Beach) serves all-day pub food, whiskey shots, and TV screens for sports addicts. The Cayman Falls Shopping Center is another hub for inexpensive bars and restaurants. If you tire of Seven Mile Beach, take the bus or rent a car at the in-house Hertz desk to get to Rum Point, the location for full-moon bioluminescence kayaking; Cemetery Beach West; or Barkers National Park for horseback riding. Refuel on fresh juices at Island Naturals Café in West Bay.
