Sunken Gardens
Visitors have enjoyed strolling the idyllic Sunken Gardens for nearly 100 years. At 1.6 hectares (four acres), this botanical garden in St. Petersburg is relatively modest in size yet it manages to find room for some 50,000 tropical plants, along with flamingos and other exotic birds. Waterfalls, fish ponds, an orchid arbor and many other features dot the landscape, all connected by meandering footpaths. The Growing Stone is a popular photo-op spot, thanks to a sign claiming that whoever sits on the fossilized limestone rock “shall be granted tranquility, inner harmony and the talent to make things grow.”
