Sun Valley is known as a biking mecca for its abundant summer singletrack and paved pathways. But the two wheeled don’t hibernate in winter here, they get fat! If you haven’t yet been introduced to the notion of fat bikes, get ready. Fat bikes are a special type of mountain bike fitted with 4 to 5 inch wide tires which make riding over winter trails a blast. Sun Valley has a variety of designated “Fat Bike Friendly” trails as well as miles of snowmobile paths to explore. For those who don’t ski or just love riding so much they can’t stop, this is a fun and safe way to get out in the crisp mountain air. It’s also a great workout which can take you to amazing places. Just be sure to stay on designated Fat Bike Friendly trails as the valley’s pristine Nordic ski trails are not all open to riding. Rentals can be found at Backwoods Mountain Sports and Sturtevant’s in Ketchum for around $45 a day.
