Stone Barn Brandyworks is a craft distiller with an ever-expanding set of big, delicious flavors filling every small bottle. They use regional ingredients to produce a variety of fruit brandies, grappa, and brandy-based liqueurs. When the harvest is over, Stone Barn settles into the business of making a variety of whiskeys.
The location, while not obvious, is really convenient to get to, just off Powell in SE. The distillery is a tangle of tubes, tanks, and aging barrels, along with a plentiful inventory of all their offerings, with most set out for tastings. It's a cozy space for a warehouse and the products warm things up as well. They do some innovative variations on classics that are sure to astound the discriminating pallet. The Nocino, an Italian tradition, is made from green walnuts collected around the Fourth of July on the streets of PDX. They're shelled and soaked in whiskey and liqueur, a little pinot noir, and some spices for five months, aging out just in time for the holidays. The whiskey ranges from smooth and mellow to clean and crisp. The brandies pay homage to the fruits used in their creation. The Red Wing coffee liqueur and Eastside Ouzo are in a class by themselves.
These small-batch treasures can be enjoyed year-round, straight up or as part of some elaborate concoction that only a late night out on the deck in August can produce. Call ahead, space and times are limited. But do call and take your taste buds for a spin.
