On the last Saturday in August each year there is a very special country fair at Stock Gaylard in Dorset, England. This is the Oak Fair and celebrates the art and craft of wood.
Stock Gaylard is a very popular gathering of country people, locals and those in the know. This is a traditional day out where the old crafts such as skep making, carving, and stick making can all be seen. There are furniture makers alongside old men crafting wood fences in the local way. Hawk handlers and men driving horses with ploughs display their skills.
This is a place to see the heart of the countryside in all its glory from celebrating the beauty of trees, watching deer in the nearby park and enjoying the local food.
It is a wonderful day out in the British countryside and to enjoy the beauty of traditional rural ways of life, wood craft and many other agricultural things.
For somewhere to stay the traditional yurts at Stock Gaylard are an unusual form of holiday accommodation in the area.
In 2013 the Oak Fair is on 24th August.
