Visit the small chapel where one of the world’s most famous Christmas carols originated. If you can, come here during Advent or on Christmas Eve, as the village of Oberndorf turns into a snowy epicenter of holiday spirit. On the night of the 24th, visitors from all over the globe assemble before the chapel to sing “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,” as it is called in the original German. This may be one of the most magical and touching events you can experience during the holidays and is definitely worth the short trip from Salzburg. Even if you can’t make it during Advent, there are the Silent Night museum and the composer’s memorial to visit.
