Because of its remote location, Stanley and its environs are home to an unusual combination of flora and fauna. A walk around the islands will bring you into close contact with a wide variety of birds and mammals, many unique to the islands. You might see upland geese wandering the fields, gulls dropping mussels on rocks to break the shells for a quick meal and southern giant petrels gliding overhead. Also look for endemic Falkland flightless steamer ducks and listen for their unique call. A walk along the water will introduce you to the vast Magellanic penguin colony, as well as sea lions and dolphins that follow boats into the harbor.
