Exploring ruins while hiking the Glendalough Valley
In the Wicklow Mountains, stay in the tiny town of Glendalough to spend a day hiking the trails and enjoying the nature and wildlife.
We opted for the Orange trail that took us up the side of a small waterfall, then continued at a comfortable pace to an overlook with amazing views of the Upper and Lower Lakes of Glendalough.
After looping back down, we came across a small sign and a wooden gate leading off the main trail, so we followed it out of curiosity. After a short walk and swatting branches out of the way, we came across the ruins of what we later found out to be St. Saviour's Church from the 12th century. We were the only people there--such an amazing, peaceful place to rest up before heading back to the trailhead.
